Round 1 Game Day Roundup v Leeton

FOOTBALL

The trip to the Leeton Showgrounds was well worth the effort last week with WINS across all grades of football and netball bar the B grade who were gallant in defeat.

The 17s kicked it off in style setting he trend for the rest of the day with a solid win. Young J Casey slotted a lazy 5 down forward, J Jenkins close to BOG chiming in with 2 majors and found plenty of it. Mannel, Driscoll and Dean were in the top 5 in what was a excellent win against a quality aide. The coaches are happy with the effort thus far

The magoos were simply too fit in the end and ran away with it. A young side up against mature bodies saw Leeton in it early, but the run and carry saw the boys break the lines and kick a score to get the chocolates on the day. Some brilliant pieces of play , Ash DIckenberg had moves similar to a B double but still slotted a couple( 5 actually )  important ones. Sam Schirmer’ was busy as a one legged man in a bum kicking contest , Cooky returned and played well above his weight with some big shirt fronts! Luco was better than the average bear at times and  J Jenkins showed why he is pushing for senior selection. Another great start to the season from the 2’s.

What was billed as match of the round by many pundits in the SENIORS, didn’t fail to deliver either with an emphatic display from both sides, with the Tiger brigade running out eventual winners. The club welcomed Shaun Campbell as coach for his debut game for the club and he didn’t fail to disappoint, Rob Touhey also donned the yellow sash for his first run, and didn’t he make his presence felt with some big hits. BOG , Ben Kelly who made his senior debut and didn’t look out of place either. Ran all day, crashed packs and kicked a snag that sealed the game late, Big effort Ben. Seasoned campaigner John Anstee was rock solid down back with Nick McCormack paying like a caged lion at times.  Jacko Kelly had more moves than a can of worms at times, Jim Carrol showed why getting him back at the club was a major coup with a fine display. Jade Hodge was another playing his senior debut and attacked the footy like he has played 50.  Overall  it was 21 man effort and was great to get the Crows scalp on their home deck. Not an easy feat.

This week we celebrate Anzac Day with the annual clash against the Demons. This game has and will always be a ripper of a contest regardless of where clubs sit on the table. Coming of a loss the Demon’s will be as hungry as Seagull lost in a desert for the four points.

NETBALL

Round 1 saw Tigers travel to Leeton for an early start with the Under 17’s.

The day was very successful for our netballers with us coming home with four wins from five matches.

The Under 17’s played a close match challenging the girls to play tight defence and mistake free attack, with a particularly good performance from Bridget Robertson. They proved too strong for Leeton winning by 2 goals 21-19. This was followed by another close game in C grade with a win by two goals 32-30, with great skill and determination shown by Emma Van de Rijt. Unfortunately B grade were unable to follow suit relying heavily on Bree Picciolo in defence losing the game 45-13. Reserve Grade showed some great defensive skill throughout their game gaining valuable turnovers to allow the attack and shooters to convert this into goals. The combination of Bree Cain and Grace Cornell proving invaluable in the win of 43-26.  A grade demonstrated great skills in their win of 81-34. Rachael Addison  dominated with her speed and strength through the mid court allowing both Lana Duffy and Ella Finemore to transfer this into points.
